NEWS: On The EuroTrip Circuit, Facebook Is The New Email

View ANALYSIS: Productivity Value of Facebook

Facebook is a social network. Many potential users fear that they don't have time to check in with Facebook everyday. Let's review its productivity value...

On The EuroTrip Circuit, Facebook Is The New Email

Dan Frommer | May 9, 2008 lisbon-trolley.jpgThe biggest risk to Facebook and its valuation (SAI 25 #1) is that it's a fad. But from what I saw in Portugal last week, Mark Zuckerberg and co. need not worry.

I had the pleasure of spending nine days bumming around Lisbon and the Algarve coast, eating lots of seafood and letting my pulse take a rest. (Blogging kills, remember?) To meet people -- and save Euros -- I stayed in two excellent hostels.

Four years ago, when I spent three months backpacking in Europe, email was crucial. After you made pals with someone at a hostel, a park, a museum, a train ride, wherever, the last thing you did was get their email address. I carried a tiny notebook around in my pocket, and the last few pages were full of random email addresses. Four years later, many of us still keep in touch.

lisbon-aerial.jpgThis year, there was a new phrase going around the circuit -- mostly at the hostel computers with free Internet access: "Are you on Facebook?" Instead of writing down an email address to write to, you clicked "Add as friend." (Note: Not MySpace. I didn't hear that once.) Facebook was almost always the first site I saw people go to after they sat down at the computer -- email usually second.

And it makes sense. If you're spending weeks (or months) traveling around, like many of the people I met, Facebook is a much better communication platform than email. You can blast out quick status updates with your location, send longer messages or wall posts, and put up travel photos (and tag the weirdos you met) -- all on one site. Now you can even IM people if you need something quickly. Since returning to the States, I've gotten Facebook wall posts and messages from people I met in Portugal, but no emails. And I'm happy with that.

To be sure, many of the people I met were American and Canadian college students or fresh grads -- Facebook's sweet spot. But others who popped the "You on Facebook?" question were Aussies, Europeans, and (gasp!) even old folks in their 30s.

We don't expect Facebook to replace email. But the more it becomes a required-use utility, the harder it will be for users to turn off.

NEWS: Google Confirms Plans To Put Display Ads On Google.com

Ed: Integrating CPM with CPC may not be simple addition. Google is starting with image search which does not have ads today. Adding CPM ads to SEM may reduce dollar earnings from CPC.

Google Plans To Put Display Ads On Google.com

...Most importantly, Google itself is now talking explicitly about display ads on Google.com. It will start small--placing display ads on, for example, image search results. But we imagine that display ads will gradually spread throughout Google.com over the next few years.

Here's Marissa Mayer (from Bloomberg, via John Battelle):

Matching graphical-display ads with image searches ``represents a large opportunity, and there's lot of potential for advertising revenue there,' Marissa Mayer, a Google vice president, told Bloomberg Radio today. At the same time, the company must ensure such ads don't drive users away, she said...

``We haven't found a proper way to monetize image search to date,'' said Mayer, who oversees search products. ``You may see us roll out an ads-image search in the future, but when we do you'll know that's because we found a way that ultimately enhances user happiness with the product.''

Google calculated in 2006 that it was giving up as much as $200 million a year by not including text advertisements with its image search results, and that figure has probably increased since, Mayer said. Trials showed that text ads drove people away from conducting image searches, and Google dropped that idea.

Display ads may work better with image searches because they seem more natural to people looking for pictures, Mayer said. While the company has done mock-ups of how it might present the ads, it hasn't tested them on users, she said....

``DoubleClick's strength in display advertising and their work in brand advertising we think ultimately may mean we'll have a better set of options in terms of image ads to run on image search,'' she said.

Women Would Sacrifice Almost Anything But Chocolate For Blogging

A recent release of a new social media benchmark study of more than 6,000 women by BlogHer, in conjunction with Compass Partners, shows that 36.2 million women actively participate in the blogsophere every week, with 15.1 million publishing and 21.1 million reading and commenting.

68% of this BlogHer community is concentrated in the 25 to 41 age group (the GenXr's), compared to 42% for the general blogging population. Together, the Millienials and the Matures account for only about 10% of this community. Two thirds have completed college, and 46% earn over $75,000 compared to only 25% of the general community...

The blogging rates are highest among Millennials and GenX "digital natives," says the report, and Online media participation rates decline with increasing age.

CBS Digital Chief: Networks Must Embrace 'User Editors'

Ad Age: May 7, 2008 Hoag Levins

CBS Interactive president, Quincy Smith, says media companies must embrace user editors.
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The traditional television business has no choice but to ultimately find ways to embrace online fans who copy, re-edit and upload networks' copyrighted content, CBS digital chief Quincy Smith told the IAB Leadership Forum his week. President of CBS Interactive who oversees all the company's digital efforts, Mr. Smith said the "users have seen what they can do with" video and its "ridiculous" to think anything will stop them. "Media needs to be more comfortable with users as editors," he said. He also slammed the wireless industry for making the U.S. like a "sixth-world nation" with consumer-unfriendly mobile phone systems.

MTV Plans to Increase Its Blending of Ads and Shows

Published: May 8, 2008

Every year at this time, networks pitch advertisers on their programs for the coming year in previews called the upfronts. On Thursday,MTV Networks will sell not only the appeal of its programs but of its commercials as well.

Spike TV

A scene from a series of spots called “Men of Action” for Spike TV, which ties in products from Kay Jewelers and KFC.

In the past year MTV Networks, which is owned by Viacom, has produced a series of commercials for its advertisers that look like regular content on its roster of channels, including MTV, CMT and Spike.

For example, a short chase movie called “Get Moe,” intended to look like an ersatz “Bourne Ultimatum,” is actually a series of 60-second commercials for Mountain Dew. A series of shorts called “Men of Action” thrusts the heroes into violent confrontations that somehow promote the virtues of KFC and Kay Jewelers.

The stars of the CMT network’s top series “Trick My Truck” appear in a series of spots featuring tips on how to maintain your tricked-out truck, including the timely use of oil from Exxon.

At its upfront, MTV will be telling advertisers that these techniques — which are called “podbusting” because they break up commercial pods with content that is almost indistinguishable from the entertainment programming — have greatly enhanced viewer engagement with the commercials and their retention of the ads’ messages.

“The results are amazing,” Hank Close, the president for sales at MTV Networks, said in a telephone interview that previewed his sales pitch to the advertisers. “In many of these messages we’re seeing 100 percent retention.” MTV Networks wants to attract more advertisers based on the success of these experiments.

“We are increasingly being asked by advertisers to create messages for audiences in our own voice,” Mr. Close said...
