In Memory of China's Earthquake

China tallies losses, costs from quake

...from an earthquake this week that killed thousands and left thousands more missing, with estimates ranging to over $20 billion. It remains unknown... SFGate: Top News Stories
Ode to China
This touches my soul ... it's about those children trapped in the collapsed school building...I translated this in English. Enjoy each moment we have with our family and friends.   /Ming

Hold Tight to your Mama's Hands
Kido, hold tight to Mama’s hands
Way to the heaven is too dark
Mama’s worried you might bump your heads
Hold Mama’s hands tight
Let Mama guide you through
Mama’s worry that road to heaven is too dark
Fearing not being able to see your hands
Ever since the collapsed walls take sunshine away
Mama will never see your deep eyes
Kido, as you go, no more worries way ahead
No more endless homework accompanied Dad’s span
Do remember Mama and Papa
Be together once life again
Don’t worry, Mama
The way to heaven a bit crowded
Along with many fellow students
We all say no more crying
All Mama in the world are our Mama
All kids in the world are Mama’s kids
With my absence
Devote your love to all other kids around
Mama, please don’t cry as tears won’t lighten our road
Let us walk slowly
Mama, I will always remember you and dad
As promised, we be together again in second life

NEWS: Icahn Plans Yahoo Proxy Contest

Ed: No shortage of advise for Yahoo.

Icahn Plans Yahoo Proxy Contest

Carl Icahn is launching a proxy contest to unseat Yahoo's board, a move aimed at pushing Yahoo back to the bargaining table with Microsoft. Icahn plans to nominate 10 directors to replace Yahoo's board before a deadline Thursday.

Yahoo Taking It From All Sides

yahoo_mess_logo2.gifYahoo's having a rough go of it today, with the official emergence of a threat to its board led by investor Carl Icahn, and the usurpation (according to comScore) of its U.S. Web traffic leadership by Google.

In a letter to Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock, Icahn alleged the board "acted irrationally and lost the faith of shareholders and Microsoft," and proposed an alternate board that includes Marc Cuban, Adam Dell and himself. "It is unconscionable that you have not allowed your shareholders to choose to accept an offer that represented a 72 percent premium over Yahoo’s closing price of $19.18 on the day before the initial Microsoft offer." Wall Street Journal has more coverage. TechCrunch has the letter to Bostock...

Can Yahoo Get the Search Monkey Off Its Back?

Yahoo's Search Monkey is released today. Not a moment too soon. My one word summary of what Yahoo needs to do to win: Open. Nothing new there, this is the rallying cry of Yahoo's senior leaders. But perhaps I should add another word: Open faster.

Today Search Monkey, where developers can take Yahoo results and rejigger 'em, opens to the world. It's a good idea. But it's not enough.

I think Yahoo should be far more radical. Yahoo should let folks play behind the curtain. It's one thing to give folks a feed of results and let them mash it up. It's quite a different thing to let folks play with the machinery that produces the results.

Yahoo responds to Icahn’s short story with War & Peace

If you’re Yahoo and you have to respond to billionaire investor Carl Icahn’s letter telling the company he was launching a proxy takeover, you don’t have too many options — you’re going to look weak no matter what you say. The way I saw it there were two options: First, don’t respond. Maybe just pretend you didn’t get the letter and didn’t check the Internet today. Or second, come back with a response so long that it will bore Icahn out of wanting to acquire you. Yahoo chose the latter.

The response, by Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock is really quite incredible when compared to the letter Carl Icahn sent. Icahn wrote four paragraphs to Bostock. Bostock wrote thirteen in response.

Jerry To Yahoos: Please Keep Working! Jerry To Bosses: Here's What To Say (YHOO)

Carl Icahn's moves prompted a flurry of paperwork at Sunnyvale yesterday: First Roy Bostock responded to Carl, then Jerry Yang sent out two memos -- one to all the proles, and one just for "SVPs and above". But since copies of both letters were filed with the SEC Friday morning, they're bascially press releases. And both of them say the same thing: Stay the course, ignore the media, etc. And both showcase Jerry's odd distaste for capital letters.

We'd like to give Jerry credit for straight talk here, but it'd be easier to do so if he didn't repeat the same phrase -- "transforming the online experiences of our users, advertisers, publishers and developers" -- three times in the same missive.

IAB, PwC: Internet Advertising Revenues Top $21B - Another Record

Internet advertising revenues in the US reached a record high of $21.2 billion in 2007, eclipsing revenues in 2006 - the previous record year - by 26 %, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwCannounced.

Search, display, classifieds and lead generation all continued growing at a healthy rate, according to the report:

The 4Q07 internet advertising revenues hit $5.9 billion - also a historic high for a single quarter, a 24% increase over the same period in 2006, according to the “2007 Internet Advertising Revenue Report.”

The figures constituted the fourth consecutive year - and 13th consecutive quarter - of record results:

Consumer advertising remained the largest category of internet advertising spending, at 55% of 2007 full-year revenues, up from 52% from the full year 2006:

Online advertising remains concentrated, with the 10 leading ad-selling companies accounting for 69% of total revenues in the fourth quarter:

Some 51% of 2007 revenues were priced on a performance basis, up from 47% reported for 2006:

About the report (pdf): Conducted by the New Media Group of PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Internet Advertising Revenue Report was launched in 1996 by the IAB, and aggregates data from all companies that report meaningful online advertising revenues. The survey includes data concerning online advertising revenues from Web sites, commercial online services, free email providers, and all other companies selling online advertising. First and third quarter revenue reports are estimates, with the actual figures being released along with second and fourth quarter data respectively.

YouTube Adds Demographics Tab to Analytics Tools

YouTube has added a demographics tab to its Insight analytics platform for video uploaders. The feature makes it easy for creators to break down viewer patterns by age, gender or a combination of the two. The data come from birthday and gender data people are asked to share when they set up YouTube accounts.

The feature addition was announced in a blog post today from product manager Nick Jakobi. That post also notes many creators are altering their upload schedules based on learnings from the analytics tools, including insights about exactly when users are tuning in. In previous conversations with marketers, ClickZ learned that many agencies have used the platform to glean some new insights from old videos. ...
